What do Ubuntu and NE-YO have in common? A Coding Summer Camp!
Overview
Holberton School launched a free three-week summer coding camp targeting youth aged 15-18. The initiative addresses a critical shortage in the tech industry, with the US facing approximately one million unfilled IT jobs over the coming decade.
Program Details
The camp emphasizes learning through hands-on project work rather than traditional classroom instruction. Participants build their first website while learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. All development occurs on Ubuntu, with code hosted on GitHub to introduce students to open source initiatives.
Key Features
- Cost: Completely free, including provisions for transportation and meals
- Duration: Three weeks, beginning June 26th
- Technology Stack: Ubuntu, GitHub, HTML, CSS, JavaScript
- Mentorship: Silicon Valley tech professionals provide coaching and feedback during a demo day
Notable Support
GRAMMY award-winning artist NE-YO joined Holberton's Board of Trustees to help attract underrepresented groups to software engineering. He personally reviews student progress. Lamia Himdach, ChickTech's San Francisco Bay Area Co-Director, also serves as a mentor, bringing experience in encouraging girls to pursue tech careers.
Mission
The program makes quality education accessible to youth who might otherwise lack exposure to software engineering, addressing both talent shortages and industry diversity gaps.
